Before the contactor and the motor, you need to know the devices that operate them: the switch, the push button, the emergency stop, the limit switch, the lamp and the supply. Each device: a definition, its real look and symbol, a simulation, hands-on wiring, and 3 questions.
Symbols according to IEC 60617 and NEMA ICS 19. Terminal numbers according to IEC 60947-5-1: an NO contact is 13-14, an NC contact is 11-12 or 21-22, and a lamp is X1 and X2. Button and wire colours according to IEC 60204-1. Manufacturers differ in the details, so check the numbering of the device in your hand against the manufacturer's catalogue.
