Electrical Basics for Beginners

If you have never held a tester screwdriver, start here. You will understand how electricity works: voltage and current, conductors and insulators, series and parallel, and power and the electricity bill. Then you pick up the multimeter and use it to measure the socket, the water heater and the motor, wire a lamp, a socket and a two-way switch yourself, and track down home faults. Every lesson has a simple explanation, interactive experiments, practical examples and questions.

Wire colours follow IEC 60445 and protection follows IEC 60364. The tables are approximate, for typical installations; your local wiring code is the reference. Electricity is dangerous: switch off the power before any work, and test appliances while they are disconnected, except when measuring voltage and current. Your progress is saved on this device only.
