LearnElectricals · Servo motor and drive course

Servo motor and drive

A servo is what makes a machine go to the exact position at the exact speed: packaging, CNC, cut-to-length, robots. In this course you will understand the motor, the encoder and the drive from the inside, wire them, calculate the electronic gear, set the gains, run a homing sequence, drive the axis from a PLC, and clear its alarms. All of this before you open the device simulators.

Before you start: it helps to understand electrical basics and the 3-phase motor, and knowing the VFD makes things easier. If not yet, start with the electrical basics course and have a look at VFDs.
When you finish: practise on the servo simulators (Delta, Mitsubishi, Yaskawa and Allen-Bradley).

How to study here

  1. Read the explanation: one idea per part, in plain words
  2. Try it yourself: wire the drive, set the gains, run a homing
  3. Cause the faults: swap U and W, brake too fast, break the limit switch wire
  4. Answer the questions so the lesson is marked complete

This course is not tied to one brand: the ideas are the same, but terminal names, parameters, alarm codes and numbers differ from one manufacturer to another, and the numbers here are approximate training values based on general field experience. Your drive's manual is the reference before any setup on a real machine. Switch off and wait for the CHARGE lamp to go out before you touch any terminal. Your progress is saved on this device.
